Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual danger confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
