Pentagon Investigation Concludes Hegseth Placed Military Personnel in Danger with Messaging App Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by sharing classified intelligence in a private Signal group, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Incident

The online conversation in dispute contained details about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other officials in the chat reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not authorized for handling sensitive material.

Potential Risk to Troops

The internal investigation determined that the information shared by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the report also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he formally exercised that authority.

Secretary's Response

The source said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed information that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He added that he had the right to downgrade information and viewed the investigation to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The completed report has been shared with lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be made public later this week.
