Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
